MISSION STATEMENT/DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSE:
The
mission of the Family and Children’s Unit is to help families remain together
while providing a safe and nurturing environment for all family members.
SERVICES:
| CHILD
PROTECTION: This subunit
provides and coordinates assessments and ongoing services to the court,
children, and families in cases of children in need of protection and/or
services (CHIPS). |
 | Child abuse/neglect services: Assessment of the child’s safety in the
home, and determine the best way to reduce risk of harm by implementing long
term case plans and coordinating services for the entire family.

 | General child welfare assessments: Help families in crisis coordinate
appropriate supportive services to remedy their situation. |
 | Court ordered stepparent adoption screening.
|
 | Custody studies (for family court) determine the best placement for a
child in a divorce. |
|
| JUVENILE
SUPERVISION: This unit provides services to the court, juveniles, and families in cases in
which the youth has committed a status offense or a criminal act. |
 | Juvenile Intake receives referrals from law enforcement, child
protection, and schools. An assessment is conducted on each referral and a
recommendation on court involvement is made to the district attorney’s office.
Juvenile Intake also reviews all requests for temporary custody.

 | Juvenile Supervision provides dispositional services to families in which
a youth has juvenile delinquency or status offense issues.

|
| PROGRAMS
AND SERVICES: The Family and
Children’s Unit also offers the following services |
 | Information and referral: for other departments, agencies, programs,
services and other community organizations. |
 | Foster home licensing and training: Available for new and existing foster
homes. |
 | Child placement: Juveniles and children in need of protection and
services may be placed in foster care for emergency care, shelter, respite or
long term care. They may also be placed in a group home, child care institution
or juvenile detention facility. |
 | Crisis intervention: provides a quick in-home response to families who
are experiencing a crisis in an effort to minimize family difficulties and also
to avert potential out-of-home placements.

 | Independent living skills: Children who are placed in foster care between
the ages of 16 and 18 must participate in a program that will prepare them for
living on their own as a responsible adult.
|
 | Parenting services.
|
 | Home studies and reciprocal courtesy services for other Counties.
|
 | Kinship care: the care of a qualified relative for which the relative
receives payment from the Department. |
|
ELIGIBILITY:
Families with children and youth who are experiencing difficulties at home,
in school and in the community as defined by the Wisconsin Children’s Code and
Wisconsin Justice Code. Fees are charged for all out of home placements, some
contracted community services and some court ordered home studies.
