St. Croix Industries/Extended Opportunities Work Services The goal of Work Services is to provide paid employment for an indefinite period of time to persons who are unable to meet the standards of competitive employment due to a mental, physical or emotional disability. This goal is accomplished through work which is obtained from various industries and businesses. The work is performed at St Croix Industries in one of three work areas. The work performed at St Croix Industries is the foundation for all programs and training. Work becomes a tool by which the disabled individuals are evaluated and trained. Each worker is paid for the work performed on either a piece-rate or hourly basis, roughly corresponding to what one would earn in industry for a comparable amount of work. St Croix Industries is certified annually by both the State of Wisconsin and the US Department of Labor to employ disabled individuals. Certification permits St Croix Industries to pay its workers according to their abilities, provided the wage compensates the worker fairly. Rehabilitation services, such as counseling, recreation, independent living skills, basic academics and evaluation play a supportive role to successful employment at St Croix Industries or prepare, when appropriate, an individual for competitive employment. Through performing paid production work, workers develop confidence in their abilities. Periodic situational evaluations assess an individual's skills and limitations and allow for the development of goals. Emphasis is placed upon the development of work habits and work skills, appropriate social behaviors and appropriate work attitudes. For some workers, Work Services will be a permanent job as long as they care to work. For others, it can become a "stepping stone" to a part-time or full-time job in the community.
