Major home appliances, or
white goods, have long, useful lives, typically 10 to 18 years. It is
estimated that 55 million appliances will be removed from service this year.
In Wisconsin, appliances are banned from landfills and must be recycled.
Fortunately, about 75% of the typical major household appliance is made of
steel which is highly recyclable.
In St Croix County there are several ways to
properly dispose of household appliances. All residents are invited to bring
appliances to the county-wide collections held twice each year. Pricing,
locations, dates and times can be found in the St
Croix County Recycling Calendar.
For more immediate
recycling options, you can also make arrangements with your
local hauler
or the
Veolia Transfer Station in Roberts for a fee (715.749.1700).
Scrap metals dealers may
pay for old appliances or may be able to pick them up for free. In St Croix
County contact: Gary's Scrap Metals in New Richmond (715.248.3847); Nelson's
Scrap Metals in Baldwin (715.684.3043) and JR’s Advanced Disposal in Inver
Grove Heights, MN (800.358.6563).
Please keep in mind that
older appliances can contain environmentally harmful materials such as
mercury and PCBs. These substances must be removed and managed properly by a
licensed appliance or scrap metal recycler before an appliance is recycled.
