MINUTES

COUNCIL ON AGING

OCTOBER 16, 2003

CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Rich Peterson, called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. 

ROLL CALL: Members present were: Ralph Bader, Richard (Buzz) Marzolf, Gerald Peterson, Loretta Cassellius, Rich Peterson, Irene Burch, Marguerite Sumner, Bette Norman, Dr. Glenn Hoberg, Carolyn Weisenburger, Jeanette O’Connell and Alice Mullan. Also present were: Sandy Gehrmann, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Gladys Ellefson, Diana Fern, Sylvia Heller, Cindy Ahrens, Janice Thompson,Shirley Marlette, Dan Hansen, Lorraine Jacobs, and Donna Lamson.  

ADOPTION OF AGENDA: A motion was made by Marguerite Sumner and seconded by Irene Burch to adopt the agenda as printed; motion carried. 

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2003. 

ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion was made by Ralph Bader and seconded by Richard Marzolf to approve the minutes as printed; motion carried.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

Site Solicitations/Speakers Policy:  There will be no commercial presentations between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at Senior Dining Sites.  Commercial presentations at other times must be coordinated with the building owner(s) and/or the Senior Center Board.  Public agency presentations will come to the Council on Aging first.  If the site managers want the presentation at their sites, they can then make arrangements on their own.  A motion to accept the policy was made by Gerald Peterson and seconded by Ralph Bader.  Motion carried unanimously.

Budget:  Chairman Peterson, Sandy and Tracy Davis meet with the Finance Committee for Budget reviews.  The Finance Committee voted unanimously to approve the budget.  

Fall Conference:  101 people attended the conference at the Phipps on September 24th.  The Department on Aging purchased 12 of Keri Miller’s books and she donated 8 moresp each of the sites will have 2 for participants to check out.  The Department hopes to have other events at the Phipps Center for Arts.    

NEW BUSINESS:

Comforts of Home:  Mary Mahtz and Amy Luther presented information on their facilities in Baldwin and St. Croix Falls.  Information was given to Council members and the site supervisors. 

Aging Unit Assesment:  Tracy and Sandy met with Dianne Rhein from AgeAdantAge regarding the 2003-2005 plan.  So far we are ahead in a majority of the priorities of the plan.  

STAFF REPORTS:

Sandy’s Report:  Inspections by the County Sanitarian are complete.  Overall the results are good and she will provide safe food handling instructions for food, basic food safety posters, samples of thermal test strips, handouts on how to calibrate metal stem thermometers, and signs that satisfy the employee health policy.  

        Sandy and Sue Kramer will be meeting with the Family Care Council on Oct. 27th to present the services the Department on Aging has available.

        The Dining Site Surveys have been tallied.  Overall the results were excellent.  Participants are enjoying the sites they attend and feel that little or no improvement is necessary.

Tracy’s Report:  Tracy went over the surveys that were given to independent living facilities and fall conference.  There were 120 responses. 

        Van inspections are scheduled for November 14th.  Letters were sent to the site drivers to review before the inspection. 

        The A&H Transportation, Inc. board met on October 15th and renewed the Department on Aging’s contract with them for the lease 8 of their vehicles.  The lease amount went up to $400.00 a year per vehicle.  

SITE/CENTER REPORTS:  

BALDWINHeld Baked Potato Supper on Thurs., Oct. 16th as a fundraiser for the Senior Center.  Carl Strom entertained the site participants with his banjo and singing.  The monthly birthday party was celebrated on Wednesday, October 15th.  The Table of Knowledge, which used to meet at the bakery, is now meeting at the site.

DEER PARKThe sanitarian visited last month.  Going on a trip on October 17th.  Flu clinic will be held on Monday, October 20th.  The Legion has asked for a noon meal, instead of a night meal on Veteran’s Day.  A Halloween Party is planned for on the 30th.  Jan’s grandson donated a pumpkin for a weight guessing contest.

GLENWOOD CITY:  Cards and Bingo are going well.  Blood Pressure is once a month.  The center is busy putting together Halloween Bags for the participants.  A large pumpkin was donated by Wayne Peterson for guessing the weight.  Preparing for the luncheon on October 17th.

HAMMOND/ROBERTSAll activities are going well.  A bakeless bake sale will be going on until the end of October.  Participants enjoyed the leaf trip, shopping and lunch.  Planning a Halloween party.  There are several participants interested in the Rock the Halls with Buddy & Holly at the Old Gem Theatre in New Richmond.

HUDSONExercise is back.  Bingo and Popcorn is enjoyed by the participants.  Music is played twice a week – a new participant has been playing the organ.  Halloween Party is in the works.  They are planning a lunch out to Denny’s on Friday, October 24th. Massage is still twice a month.

NEW RICHMONDOn October 1st site participants went to the Old Gem Theatre in New Richmond.  On December 3rd they are planning to go again for a matinee.  Around 45 people from Baldwin and New Richmond went on a boat trip.  On October 30th a combined Halloween and Birthday Party is planned.  The New Richmond High School has invited site participants to view the dress rehearsal in mid November.  Lefsa Clinic will be held next week. 

RIVER FALLS:  AARP driving course was held already – 12 people registered.  The annual Christmas Party will be held on December 1st at the West Wind with the Cardell’s performing.  General meeting will be held on October 28th with the Board meeting on November 5th.  A taxi fund has been set up for those who need transportation.

SOMERSET Halloween costume party is planned for the 31st. They are receiving bags of apples from a local man.

WOODVILLECards and bingo are going well.  Massage is coming in.  They purchased a book for the site from the River Falls Library.  They are having a Halloween Party – costume and prizes.  Thanksgiving Dinner will be on November 18th instead of November 26th.
